SmartConnect IIoT provides an MTConnect gateway for CNC machines. It collects CNC machine data and makes it available through MTConnect where supported, so MTConnect-based applications can read machine data over a standard interface.
What is MTConnect?
MTConnect is an open, read-only standard designed specifically for manufacturing equipment, and it is widely used with CNC machine tools. It defines a common vocabulary for machine data and an HTTP-based way for applications to request that data as structured XML. Because it is purpose-built for machine tools, MTConnect maps naturally to CNC concepts such as controller state, execution status, path position and program information.
Why MTConnect is used
- An open standard focused on manufacturing and machine tools.
- A common, semantic vocabulary for CNC machine data.
- Simple HTTP request/response that is easy for applications to consume.
- Widely adopted for CNC machine monitoring and data collection.
SmartConnect and MTConnect
SmartConnect connects to your CNC machines and collects the configured data. Where supported, it provides that machine connectivity and data through MTConnect, so MTConnect clients and monitoring applications can read it using the standard.
| Machines | CNC machine tools |
|---|---|
| SmartConnect | Collects and structures machine data |
| MTConnect | Provides machine data through the standard (where supported) |
| Clients | MTConnect-based monitoring and applications |
MTConnect and OPC UA together
MTConnect and OPC UA are complementary. Many manufacturers use MTConnect for CNC machine data and OPC UA for broader industrial integration. SmartConnect can publish collected machine data through both, alongside MQTT. Learn more in OPC UA vs MTConnect.
MTConnect support: availability depends on the machine and controller. Mitsubishi, Fanuc — contact us to confirm MTConnect support for your CNC machines.
